Since Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) deals with what specifically works well, I investigated the patterns and found the answer!

The difference that makes the difference

It is the daily practice of heart and brain meditations that generates change at the energy level. I already mentioned in previous articles that the heart influences the brain and vice versa. And this can be a harmonious and coherent dance or a survival and chaotic dance (which is where much of humanity tends to live, particularly in the these years). Do we choose maintain chaos and disconnection? Is this that we want to keep perpetuating for generations?!

– No!!

Relax, close your eyes, focus and surrender

If we want to guide our children, being ourselves, parents, educators, teachers… an example of what we want to see in the world, with oneness, we can opt for relaxation, focus on the heart and generate generative emotions. When this happens, the heart begins to produce a very low rate, only possible with the heart rate. Science now shows that this meditative practice makes us more creative. The heart informs the brain that it is safe to create, to awaken, to create consciousness to live and strive rather than survive. And this is how we begin to see possibilities, light, where before we saw obstacles and darkness.

The science behind generative parenting

My heart seems to burst with joy every time a new article is published in a scientific journal confirming generative parenting practices. Because NLP, created 50 years ago, one of the pillars of GP, is not science, nor psychology, nor psychotherapy. Still, today, the latest advances in science (especially the vast majority of confirmations from my dear HeartMath scientists), demonstrate everything that NLP has given us brought from the beginning, when it was still called META.

Goodbye degenerative emotions

This harmonious and coherent dance between the heart and the brain allows us to generously and gratefully say goodbye to degenerative emotions, those that take away our vital energy, that put us on the survival side: stress, anxiety, worry… We now broaden horizons and see possibilities. In other words, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for the conscious creation of our lives! Why? Because we begin to generate generative emotions, which nourish our energy by expanding it to those around us.

All this to say that the more relaxed we live in our heart, the more our brain and body open to energy. When we are no longer focused on survival, anxious, worried about dangers, threats, about the next moment – and we already know that where we put the focus, we put the energy – the body is super relaxed, calm and the mind more awake and aware.

Because just as degenerative emotions have the power to activate the sympathetic nervous system, generative emotions do it in the opposite direction, generating physical, mental and spiritual well-being. In us, in our children and in the Planet!

The secondary effect of heart-brain coherence

We start living in ourselves, conscious and joyful. Is there a better gift for a child than having parents that embody presence? Parents who vibrate unconditional love and acceptance?!

This coherent energy raises our consciousness and we feel safe to create from the unknown. That is to say, we leave the three-dimensional reality: cause – effect and we go on to live in the quantum reality, causing an effect.

I share with you a testimony of someone who experienced for the first time the “heart-brain coherence” meditation I developed for PG:

And that is why those who are truly committed to the daily practice of generative parenting see infinite possibilities. And no, that does not mean that we do not have obstacles in life. It means that we welcome, integrate and transcend the wisdom that each of the obstacles offers us, with the elegance of dance, a coherent heart and brain. It means that we choose to assign new meanings to the events of our lives. Meanings that allow us to consciously self (re)parent. Only then can we guide our children!!

I believe that perfection exists in every moment as it is. Even when it doesn’t feel so comfortable. And what I feel, from experience, assuming myself as part of a generative family is that holiday vacation are always perfect. They reveal so much of the edges that are still to be ironed out in our family system. After all, we are systems within other systems and we are free to choose which course of our boat, as we explore at Conscious Systems.

When we look at the smiling photos of the perfect holiday vacation, we get to see beyond them and feel the really live in that moment, frozen in the picture now. Just like in everyday life, we have moments of total connection that alternate with those of complete disconnection! Do you remember that everything in itself contains its opposite?! You only know what happiness is because you know unhappiness and vice versa, for example. In generative families, parents also make tantrums, not just children. I do, my husband does. Oops! The difference is that when this happens, we become aware in a click and access internal resources to resolve the issue. Sometimes it goes very well, sometimes not so much. This is called Life!

Tips from a Generative Family

Some time ago, I wrote an article filled with 11 practices for a family holiday vacation in harmony that I will soon share here. We always define the intention of our holidays vacation. In addition to the individual intention (we are four), we define a general intention, and it is so funny and challenging to do this exercise. Therefore, our family vacation begin even before packing. We define how much time, which destination, which accommodation, we investigate what activities exists (without programming any). If it involves long trips, we choose to divide by phases, which is what makes sense to us according to our needs, but I know families that do it directly and everything is fine. You already know that each family is a unique system, with unique specificities and that what works with one does not necessarily result in another. I can give you some examples that worked very well here. If we travel by car, we stop whenever necessary and refuse to be more than four hours on wheels. When we decided to meet Japan and South Korea we chose to fly direct from Lisbon to Dubai, rest two days and then embark towards Japan. From Yokohama we went on a cruise and met other wonderful Japanese cities. We picked up the green tea, met a 100-year-old grandmother who was teaching the tradition of the tea ceremony to children a little older than our littlest and of course, we joined them. Already when we travel to Indonesia, we take advantage of more affordable flights and revisit Istanbul, from there we continue to Malaysia, we stayed two days and the next stop was in Thailand, where we rested, visited very interesting temples, had an opportunity to commune with the monks and their meditative practices. We really learned a lot and only then did we fly to Indonesia (Bali). Yes, we invest time, patience, quality presence (which is not easy, but today we know how to be more and more present) what we save on the flights we apply for stays and compensates every second, every cent. We all came back infinitely richer.

Perfect holiday vacation reveal edges to file

We have now returned from a holiday vacation that showed me more than I wanted to see. It hurt, I confess. It hurt when I cried, when I threatened, when I blackmailed, when I imposed … Yes, I had moments like these. And it hurt to know that I know how to do differently, that all these behaviors reveal how much I still have to grow up to be the mother my daughters deserve. They have led me to reflect on my path and it makes so much sense. It was the perfect vacation to guide me on the right track.

In addition to incredible stories that I will share with you, new knowledge of generative, conscious family practices I bring with me the sure that it is even imperative to reduce the number of hours in front of the screen, the keyboard and increase the quality of my presence in me and in my family. An ANLP Award does not fall from the sky

No one wins an NLP Award by a sleight of hand, or just for the sake of it, or for having a beautiful smile. This is a responsible award, whose attribution recognizes the conscious contribution, either individual or collective, within the field of NLP, with strict evaluation criteria.

When I was nominated, I shared with you the meaning (portuguese) it had for me. Now I can add a bit more. Awards and rewards are not what I believe should be in the dictionary of life. But I believe in recognition. And this award is exactly that. It recognizes that I, Rita Aleluia, am a NLP professional who is helping to create an inclusive world, through NLP & Generative Parenting, an alternative route to an urgent new paradigm in education.

What you will read now is the alignment between vision, mission, role and ambition

The work I slowly started developing in 2011 has a huge positive impact on families and schools in many countries. This NLP Award is about human rights! It recognizes that we are all different and have equal value. That we grow from differences and inclusion is the way to go. It recognizes that our children may (re)situate us and direct us to the essential of our existence, to what is invisible to the eyes and decisive for the world to move forward. It recognizes that unconditional love is the cradle of humanity, that authenticity and congruence are godmothers. It recognizes that girls and boys, men and women are biologically different, but equal in emotions, desires, needs, opinions. That we are all part of something greater, that we are all one, that we are all responsible. That connection must be recognized, and the myth of perfection must let go. It also recognizes, for the first time, that Portugal has something to say worldwide and to contribute to Neuro-Linguistic Programing. 

I keep creating NLP & Generative Parenting with vision, lots of live, presence, sense of mission and I do it in community. A creation that has gone through an incredible improvement in quality over the last three months, as a result of many adjustments, research and experience on the ground. As a result of falling and rising again. Of a lot of resilience. Of embracing fear and evoking courage. Of trusting and moving forward, even when the world says, “you are crazy”. Of bringing peace to the hurricane woman that is hidden within me. Of letting shine the light that is unique. Everything that is done with the heart is aligned from the inside out, from heaven to Earth, from you to your next. This is the only equation I know and that I want to see happen in the work, the equation of love. Therefore, yes, the 2019 NLP Award in Education is mine and I deserve it.

Thank you to my daughters, my guru girls, who teach me what it is to love unconditionally; to my husband and partner, my accomplice for all times; to my parents, mentors, to you, who trust in this work, who accept to do different and create a better world. Without your trust and faith, none of this would be possible. Thanks to José Figueira with whom I started walking the path of NLP, to NLP U, where I learned about a systemic and generative NLP, to Robert and to Stephen for their contribution with Generative Coaching. Thanks to ANLP for having the courage to recognize merit to professionals from all over the world and to contribute a lot to honoring this noble profession. The NLP Awards are born from the intention of recognizing and honoring annually the impact and difference made by NLP professionals in all areas. As the organization puts it, “it is our chance to shout from the rooftops, be proud of the profession we represent and celebrate those who really are using NLP to make a difference out there in the real world and celebrate all that is good in our community.”

Nominations can be sent to the NLP International Awards by any person wishing to do so. They are then assessed by a judicious independent panel, composed of experienced NLP Master Trainers, who validate all the work presented and the impact thereof, regarding the nominee and decide whether or not he/she is able to be officially nominated for the awards. After the official nominees have been announced, the same jury will gather all information deemed relevant to decide, rigorously and independently, who the winners are in all categories. For instance, my nomination was sent by Judith DeLozier, by Robert Dilts and by Sónia Silva Franco (a biographer and journalist who does not even work in NLP, but who knows my work through my interviews, lectures, books and two of my training sessions that she attended).

Every year there was a buzz because neither John Grinder nor Richard Bandler had their names among the chosen ones. And this was only because no one has ever submitted their nomination. Disagreements between the two creators are well-known, as well as their consequences in the field of NLP, which is such a beautiful and important domain in this world. ANLP, an association to which I am honored to belong, decided to recognize the contribution of these two men through the NLP Awards, by the voice of president Karen Falconer. After all, if it were not for them, we would not be here today, here and now, to be the difference that makes the difference in the lives of so many people. The awards were accepted on their behalf by Robert Dilts.

May we all cooperate. May each one of us contribute with the best of himself/herself, with his/her unique gift, gathering synergies, building bridges, raising awareness levels, with much love and compassion. Welcoming, integrating and going beyond differences, that place, full of infinite opportunities, where we all may grow. This is how the world moves forward!

Having said that, you can now anticipate that NLP and Education is the cradle for everthing in life! So powerful!

What is the difference that makes the difference when we compare NLP and Education with other approaches?

I would like to have a linear response, but, as in everything in this Life, such a response does not exist. Even because I do not know (in fact, nobody does) the infinite educational approaches that exist in the world. There are families, organizations, schools, universities… that find in the practice of NLP and Education the ‘formulas’ to create the conditions to achieve success (in the various meanings you may choose to give it), with ecology, ethics and tranquility, in what they intend to do. And there is not a single formula, every family draws its own strategy – that is the great beauty of NLP.

For it to really operate, the generative change in the World.

Then, as we have discussed before, NLP and Education offers you tools that, if you do not transform into practices, will not serve you or those around you. That is why I apply them in conjunction with Generative Coaching. So that it can really bring about the generative change in the World.

I always say that NLP and Education is a way of Living! Ah, and it is not about being perfect, but rather about being conscious and authentic. If you have already read my book “Mães do Mundo” (Mothers of the World), it is not something new.

Among the many models we use, I like to highlight the power of intentions that emerge after we explore, to the fullest extent, the Neurological Levels, as well as the amazing Communication Model, which enables us to communicate with authenticity and congruence, with ourselves and with others, and the power of Language. The Anchors, the Perceptive Positions, which also allow you to put yourself in the place of others, becoming aware of the diversity of Maps of the World, discovering and activating resources… What about the wonderful rapport?! If we start from the assumptions of NLP, we will find the basis. For example, you are not your behaviour, and it is always the best you can have at that time, it is what it is and everything is always well. And more, much more! Yes, it is magic!

One of the persons who most inspires my mission is Maria Montessori and in the practices of NLP and Education, in NLP & Generative Parenting, I find space for this to happen naturally:

“Help me to grow, but help me do it myself”.

NLP and Education is about pouring the cup and creating space so that something never experienced before can emerge. Come along, it is time, it is ‘tea time’.

At IAGC and Conscious Systems, we know that we are a system, that is we change, transform and create new thoughts and behaviors in a certain context, that will necessarily be reflected in a better World, in a generative World, in a World where everyone counts.

IAGC is the culmination of a whole lifetime of work by Robert Dilts and Stephen Gilligan – in the field of personal development, especially based on NLP and psychology. IAGC is an international organization (of which I am blessed and proud to be a member), spread across the five continents, which supports professionals in the field of Generative Coaching, Consultancy, Therapy and Trance who undertake specific actions to create a better World, a generative World.

But what is a better World, a generative World?

A better World, a generative World is one that creates something new, unheard of, never seen before, with a very clear positive intention. It is what I like to call, and I believe it is, the World of Good!

To this end, it combines creativity with the most meaningful things we want to bring to our lives. This is what we work with Conscious Systems:

• How to develop an extraordinary relationship with myself?
• How to build structuring personal and cultural relationships?
• How to create successful systems (families, companies, organizations)?
• How to welcome obstacles, by integrating and transcending them?

And how do we build this Generative, Better World?

IAGC applies the values of Generative Coaching, Consulting, Therapy, Certified Training and Trance to lift lives, communities and organizations to the highest level. Through the conversation between multiple intelligences – verbal and visual, individual and collective, somatic and intellectual, unconscious and conscious – it is possible to build new realities, performances at an unbeatable level, new routes and, consequently, a better World, a generative World.

When I am asked to describe the work of Conscious Systems up to five words… it is simple:

Now, at Conscious Systems, we have chosen to work through Generative Coaching, Consulting and Training.

In addition to creating and generating a new reality, we develop the practices, based on love, that allow us to keep these states and take them with us wherever we are. Something that I love and practice, in particular, is:

The work carried out by IAGC and Conscious Systems allows you to bring this dream into conscience and to make it real.

In September 2017, in Bali (where Gregory Bateson – one of the role models of NLP, has lived for three years to investigate something far ahead of his time, which he then put into his work “Balinese Character – A Photographic Analysis”), concrete steps began to be taken to put it on paper. New assumptions adapted to it are being created, new approaches to modelling (the basis of NPL) and much more. Thus, with the presence of Robert and Deborah Dilts, with the contribution of Stephen Gilligan and Judith DeLozier, we gathered 24 participants from all over the World – Master Practitioners, Trainers, Master Trainers and co-authors of NLP, and we started the co-creation, an exploration that goes far beyond techniques and tools. The first step was to model spiritual leaders (who we found out in the field to be ‘healers’) and to feel the importance of modeling communities instead of individuals.

Then, in January, in Alicante, at the NLP Leadership Summit, the 4th Generation NLP was formally presented. I am blessed to be part of the group of co-creators and to be able to contribute more actively to be and make the difference that makes the difference in our World.

Speaking of difference, I now summarize the discussion led by Robert in our working group at the NLP Leadership Summit.

The difference that makes the difference in 4th Generation NLP

The 1st Generation NLP was led by the cognitive mind (Cognitive Intelligence), from where a therapeutic model would emerge; in the 2nd Generation NLP, the somatic part, the beliefs (Somatic Intelligence) were introduced and the model of Coaching emerged; in the 3rd Generation NLP, there is already the notion of ‘field’ between two people (in a first phase – Relational Intelligence); now, by integrating that ‘field’ and taking it far beyond, in the 4th Generation NLP, just like what happens in Generative work (Generative Change), there is a “we” that broadens, a Spiritual Intelligence. “We” as a community, “we” as a part of a Planet. And the concept of ‘Holon’ and hologram arises. In a hologram, the whole is everywhere, and every part can recreate the whole.

In the 4th Generation NLP, the notion of spirit emerges, not in the religious sense but as a subjective experience, something that is beyond me. Quantum physics goes along these lines as well and has proven the notion of systems and the notion that unpredictable events arise from them. This is from where the ‘morphogenetic fields’ also arise, of which I will tell you in a future article.

We already know that “the map is not the territory” and that we are the result of subjective experiences. So, let’s understand how we do it in a practical way, without putting our maps of beliefs on top of what arises during the experience.

The 4th Generation NLP seeks to understand if the ‘field’ is the ‘source’ or if the ‘source’ is the ‘field’. It tries to understand two phenomena: something emerges, and I do not know where it comes from and something passes through me (I channel it).

The metaphor of iPhone and 4th Generation NLP

The 4th Generation NPL does not abandon the previous generations, it integrates them! Just like the various generations of iPhone. The first generation of iPhone had no Bluetooth or Wireless. Thus, with the passing of the generations, the ‘field’ has been broadening and has incorporated Wi-Fi, 3G… A new consciousness emerges as a result of the interaction between the various systems.

Co-creation continues throughout the world. It is a slow process which, like what happened in previous generations, can take years to be completed. But believe me, some things are worth all the time we wait for them. Until then, we remain connected, more and more aware of this. I promise to come back here and talk you about 4th Generation NPL, with news that are much bigger than us.

And I’m right now, on my way to UCSC, for the second consecutive year. The energy that it’s felt is incomparable, the exchange with the co-authors of NLP, with the mother of NLP – Judith DeLozier with Robert Dilts and other members and trainers of NLPU, from dozens of different nationalities, is indescribably generative, it is taught and practiced third generation NLP, and almost fourth generation.

Here, there is space for individual growth supported by the collective, without judgements, without prejudices, without demands and rules based on limiting beliefs. Here, each BEING is unique and with its own light, it exists because it deserves it, it shines and has a mission that is being fulfilled. There is space for vulnerability. It is the harmonious symmetry between soul and ego. And it’s also the confidence that we’re working and evolving in our best version.

And it’s no surprise that the field has this energy. This college is based on a democracy that encourages the community towards a strong feeling of belonging and engagement. The vision of this college is of a place where students feel happy, can be creative and work in community and individually.

Today Kresge College is named Carl Rogers College. The humanist psychologist that has been modelled by NLP. The same that made Kresge College a case study, in a groundbreaking academic experiment where it was possible to create a community across university boarders, as Grinder describes in the book “Origins”

And it’s also in Carl Rogers that most of the Parenting with NLP practices are based on. Being one of them:

Unconditional Love versus Conditional Love

Rogers believed that people know what is good for them and they can find what they need in nature and family. I also believe that exists, in each of us, an element that knows what is best. I mention that on my book “Mothers of the World” – NLP at the service of education with ethics. The difficulty, according to Rogers, arises when society and culture develop mechanisms that counter those potentially harmonious relationships.

And among the most harmful is what he calls “conditional appreciation”. In other words, Conditional Love!

When family, school, society only fulfill the needs of a child or an adult if they prove they’re worthy. Is what happens in traditional parenting, when parents reward the “good” behavior with love and punish children when they show behaviors the parents consider “bad”. For example, when they get a sweet if they eat the soup and no PlayStation if they won’t eat.

Children that live in this kind of environment become slaves of compliments, rewards and prizes. They inevitably become egocentrics. Now, when the other, that so many times is your child, feels he has equal value, equal dignity, when his needs, wishes, ideas and emotions have equal value,
when he feels that he exists, he is seen, listen to, that he is respected and acknowledged – he’s facing Unconditional Love.

This child or adult will grow up and live with self-esteem, he will feel that he is much more than his behavior and that behavior is always the best he can and know at each moment! This is Parenting with NLP.

In Bali, this September it will born the 4th generation NLP. It is oriented on developing spiritual intelligence. Two Master Trainers from NLP University, Colette Normandeau and Humphrey Conceição, felt that the conditions to the world plunge into the 4th generation of NLP were created. They united synergies in this challenge they’ve embraced with total support and presence of many of the most prestigious co-authors and trainers of global NLP: Robert Dilts, Deborah Bacon Dilts, Judith DeLozier, Steven Gilligan…

4th generation NLP is oriented on developing spiritual intelligence, connection at a Source, Soul and Spirit level. We seek a deeper meaning within and beyond self and collaboration.

I am very passionate about NLP. You probably are too. Since my first NLP training courses, I had the impression of finally finding a reference book for being, and a key to let surface what is most precious and sacred in me. And what to say to our magnificent toolbox for transformation? We have access to a universal treasure chest, garnished with ultra-effective and powerful tools and models from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation NLP. All so useful to make a difference in the lives of people and the world. Much Joy and Gratitude I have for this.

As coaches, consultants, trainers, school directors, we propagate our love for life, humanity and NLP and have maybe started to reflect what will be the next generation of NLP. Many have shared with me that they have been working at it for a certain time, each in their own corner. Last summer at NLPU in a discussion with Robert Dilts on 4th generation, the word ‘Source’ came about. The next level would be more spiritual and an exploration of ‘Source’.

A group of “NLPiers” from the NLPU community, believe it is NOW time to connect and co-create together this 4th generation…to define it, to share what already exists, to mutually enrich ourselves, to start modelling connection to Source and prepare what comes next… TOGETHER. It will also be an occasion to transmute original NLP history, the squabbles and conflicts of appropriation. Let’s walk the talk and live our values we teach: love, authenticity, openness, flexibility, fun, creativity, respect, integrity, congruence and humanity.

What was the core intention for creating the event in Bali?

We have so many people spread through the world who have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience with different environments and cultures. Their own NLP skills have helped them develop individual strengths, which we assess will be so much more powerful if put together in collaboration. Thus we will all gain when we surface and develop with the collective minds to:

• Develop the next generation of NLP together,
• Create new tools to be used in certifying schools, trainings and individual consultations,
• Uniting and strengthening the community, being as a community the change we want to see in the world,
• Growing individually and collectively,
• Enhancing our teachings through congruency ‘walking our talk’.

Oneness…finding common ground that place where we are one. Strengthening and sponsoring our commonality, thus, contributing to more love, peace and harmony.

What’s the essence of this encounter?

• Exploring and defining Source, modeling spiritual leaders in their ability to connect to Source.

What from your point of view, is the basis of the 4th generation of NLP?

• 1st generation NLP was based on changing and enhancing behaviors and cognitive mindset
• 2nd generation NLP contributes to changing beliefs and introduces work with the somatic mind
• 3rd generation NLP is more oriented in systemic, generative collaboration and development of field mind
• 4th generation NLP is oriented on developing spiritual intelligence, connection at a Source, Soul and Spirit level. We seek a deeper meaning within and beyond self and collaboration.

Finding ways to honor our essence, honor life, see through the eyes of the heart and soul the beauty of our human experience.

What is the difference that makes the difference, in our actual world?

On a visit to a cathedral, a tourist saw an artist working on a gigantic painting, on a wide wall to fill. Before that situation, the tourist couldn’t refrain his curiosity and dared to ask the artist:

Please tell me, you don’t get worried about all that empty space you need to paint, to fill? You don’t get worried, stressed, thinking about when you’ll be able to finish such a piece?

The artist throw him a tender smile and answered unaffectedly:

My dear, I only know what I can do daily. When I arrive, each morning, I highlight the area I will work on that day and I don’t allow myself to worry about the space still to fill. I take one day at a time and the painting will be finished on time.

And you, what are you afraid of? What might happen to your life if you would live one day at a time?

Much of the big obstacles and challenges that hold back and slow down our lives are like this big wall. We can worry about the huge space for the painting we have to create or, we can simply start filling it with amazing images, creative and unique – our lives imprint – doing the best we can and know at each moment, on each day that is given to us. In the end, we will have finished the best painting.
