WHAT IS IT?
“Tools for dreamers!"
This is how Robert Dilts, co-author of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) defines it. I would say that's true, and much more!
Because of the greatness of its applications and results, it is a challenge to define it.
NLP studies the structure of subjective human experience. That is, how we organize what we see through our senses - VAKOG - Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory (smell) and Gustatory (taste).
It describes the fundamental dynamics between the mind (neuro), and language (linguistic) and how their interaction affects our body (physiology) and behavior.
NLP is applied in all contexts of our life!
NLP is also about self-discovery, while exploring identity and mission. It provides the framework for us to understand and relate to the "spiritual" part of the human experience that goes beyond us as individuals, within our family, community, and global systems.
With NLP, the processes of personal development, transformation and change operate quickly and effectively, with wisdom and vision.
Excellence comes when we have many choices and wisdom with multiple perspectives. NLP gives us all this!
- Life and mind are systemic processes.
- The processes that occur within each person and between humans and their environment are systemic;
- Our bodies, societies, and our universe form an ecology of complex systems and subsystems, all of which interact and influence each other;
- Our perception of the world is a personal projection resulting from our own history, made from our memories, values, convictions, character;
- Beliefs are self-fulfilling prophecies - limiting beliefs produce limited results, non-limited beliefs produce unlimited results;
- Being on the side of the cause is to take responsibility for "driving the bus of your life". Otherwise it is to be on the side of effect, to recklessly blame others;
- The central nervous system doesn't understand denials - the more we fight against what we do not want, the more we get back the things we don't want.
- The meaning of communication is the response we get;
- Body and mind influence each other - they are a cybernetic unit;
- The map is not the territory (the words we use are not the events or subjects they represent);
- The most important information about someone is their behavior;
- Behavior is transformable and current behavior is always the best choice one has at the moment;
- The behavior of someone is not the person (accept the person, transform the behavior);
- We have all the resources we need to succeed (there are no people without resources, there are people who do not use their resources);
- I am the owner of my mind and therefore of my results;
- The "system" (the person, organization) with the most flexible behavior will dominate the system;
- There is no failure, there is only feedback;
- Resistance in a person is a sign of absence of rapport. There are no people of ill will, just inflexible communicators;
- All procedures should aim to increase the choice;
- All behavior and all transformation must be evaluated in terms of context and ecology;
- We get back what we focus on (go to what you want);
- Convictions determine results;
- A human being is a cluster of "parts", often in conflict.
- It is the terrain of emotions;
- Order the emotions on the "timeline" and "gestalt";
- Represses memories with unresolved negative emotions, such as protection;
- Provides the possibility of rationalizing repressed memories to release negative emotions;
- Protects and maintains the body in its integrity;
- It is a slave, it obeys orders;
- Controls and stores all normal sensations and also, according to some, telepathic sensations, and offers them to the conscious;
- Creates, transforms, leads and spreads "energy";
- Reacts to instinct, intuition and habit;
- Needs repetition for long-term plans;
- Is programmed to constantly seek more possibilities;
- Uses symbols and reacts through symbols;
- Takes it all personally;
- Unable to integrate or work with denials;
- Everything is directed so that it becomes (again) a unity and totality in us.
HISTORY
NLP was born at the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC), with John Grinder (with training in linguistics), Richard Handler (with training in mathematics and gestalt therapy) and Frank Pucelik (psychology) .
The goal (achieved with mastery) was to shape human excellence.
On their first work published – “The structure of magic” - vol. I & ll (1975,1976), they have identified the verbal and behavioural patterns of the therapists Fritz Peels (the father of the gestalt therapy) and Virginia Satir (internationally claimed as the mother of family therapy).
It was followed by “The patterns of the hypnotic tecniques of Milton Erickson”, M.D. vol. I & OK (1975,1976), where the verbal and behavioural patterns of Milton Erickson have been examined. Being him the founder of the American association of clinical hypnosis and internationally known as the most successful psychiatrist of our times.
The works continue and the foundations of NLP are described in a series of books, such as: “Frogs into princes” (Nadler & Grinder, 1979), “Neuro-linguistic Programming“ vol. I (Dilts, Grinder, Badler, Delozier, 1980), among others.
Through the years, NLP has developed and continues to investigate and to amplify tools and practices in the field of communication and transformation, shared to all areas: education, parenting, psychotherapy, health, leadership, management…
We are currently in the third generation of NLP.
The applications happen at a generative and systemic levels and concentrate on higher questions: identity, mission and vision. For this purpose, Judith Deloizer (regarded as the mother and co-author of NLP) and Robert Dilts (co-author) much had contributed to.
“The best gift someone can give me is to see me, to listen to me, to understand me and to touch me. The best gift I can give is to see, to listen, to understand and to touch the other. When that happens I feel we’ve connected to each other.” - Virginia Satir
